Academic Staff College conducts two types of courses. One, Orientation Programs, which are conducted to acquaint young college and university teachers with the wider scope of their profession and society’s expectations from them, to train the teacher for better classroom interaction through practical sessions in Academic Staff College and to develop in him a confidence towards his profession. Two, Refresher Courses for teachers at various levels to constantly update them as per the new developments and researches in their respective subjects. The Principal meets constitute the third important segment of our functioning.
At UGC Academic Staff College Jabalpur, a judicious blend of concepts, theory and practice prepares the teachers to function in a dynamic environment. The emphasis is on involving the teacher participants in the learning process and helping them to relate concepts and theory to the requirements of imparting higher education. The curriculum as laid down by the UGC embraces regular classroom-sessions, practical exercises, educational excursions, industrial visits, special seminars at prestigious training institutions like the College of Materials Management, a category ‘A’ training institution of the Indian army and Indian Council of Medical Research, peer group teaching, micro teaching, project presentation etc. The visit to the central jail and the recommendations put forth by the participants of a course are worth a mention. These activities are video graphed, enabling us to display them to the subsequent courses.
The curriculum at the Institute comprises of lectures by eminent scholars, comprehensive case studies, group discussions, peer group teaching presentations, simulation exercises, workshops, teaching games and structured and unstructured group work, along with excursions to places of academic importance. The participants are subjected to strenuous schedules to be physically and mentally adapt at handling challenges and pressures of higher education. Leaders, politicians, IPS and IAS officers, professionals like income tax advocates, high court judges, IT professionals, renowned industrialists and academicians are invited for dialogues and interaction with the participants.

When we invite a particular speaker for the first time, it is his or her standing in the intellectual world and their wide experience going along with it that guides us in our choice. But if a speaker has to be summoned for the subsequent courses, it is the written opinion submitted to us by each participant on a performa specially devised by us for the purpose that dictates us to re-request the former speakers. All other activities, like excursions to places of academic importance, training the participants in the use of library, group discussions, panel presentations and preparing resume of delivered lectures make up the remaining dimensions of our activities.
