The National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986 in its programme of action makes a pointed reference to the crucial link between teacher motivation and the quality of education. The NPE recognized the need for improving quality of teaching and proposed to provide opportunities for professional and career development so that teachers may fulfill their role and responsibility within the system of higher education. It was proposed to enhance their motivation skills and knowledge through systematic orientation in specific subjects, techniques and methodologies, and thereby inculcate in them the right kind of values that would in turn encourage them to take initiatives for innovative and creative work.

The UGC Academic Staff College organists three to five orientation programmes every year. A registration fee of Rs.500/- is charged from the participants at the time of registration to a course. Successful candidates are issued certificates as per UGC format.
The courses are full time and residential with tentatively 20 to 30 participants in each course. Any leave, absenteeism or late arrival in class during a course results in a remark on the course certificate. Punctuality, regularity, participation and purposefulness is fully emphasized. ASC Jabalpur makes arrangements for the boarding and lodging of the participating teachers at it’s guest house, located in close proximity to the administrative premises.
The participating teachers submit their applications vide an application form (annex. I) which is processed and the eligible candidates are sent intimation of selection well in advance along with the course curriculum to come prepared. They are formally deputed by the respective college/university department for the course and are treated to be on duty with full pay and allowances by the sponsoring university/college.
In order to make an orientation programme optimally effective, our ASC maintains a systematic record of all the participants, their achievement, professional growth, enhancement of abilities, career graph etc.
